A New Semester and New Opportunities

The Theta chapter of Sigma Alpha started the spring 2012 semester off by attending retreat during the weekend of January 20. It was a weekend full of laughs and bonding. After settling into the cabin, which was located in the mountains of pigeon forge, much of what was to happen for the rest of the semester was planned out. Committees were picked and then met briefly with their chairperson.

The first committee to speak was the sisterhood committee which is headed by Brittany Mitchell. Sisterhoods for the semester include a Sigma Alpha date night, a Disney sisterhood, 80’s workout night, and of course the annual Easter sisterhood.

Philanthropy chair Brittni Corder was the next person to speak on ideas for the semester. Brittni gave many ideas to choose from regarding possible philanthropy credit. These ideas included volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house, campus blood drives, participating in the UTCVM’s Feral Fixings program, a possible raffle, and our annual Ag in the Classroom philanthropy.

Laura Roddy, who is Social chair, then spoke on her ideas for the semester. Formal was discussed. This semester formal will be a murder mystery dinner that will take place in the pigeon forge area.

Next, the fundraising chair, Deanna Ingle, spoke about fundraising opportunities for the semester. Fundraisers are to include the annual Men of the Ag Campus Calendar, a bake sale, a clothes swap with Gamma Sigma Sigma, and the annual Stud Auction.
The professional chair, Alyssa Clements gave a few great ideas for the semester. These included teaching about how to correctly do documents such as resumes, cover letters, and personal statements.

The last chair to speak was the webmaster Marsha Bartholomay. She announced that an award will be given at the end of the semester for whoever posts the most about Sigma Alpha on our website, Facebook page, and Twitter.

Retreat ended with the sisters eating at Huck Finn’s in pigeon forge and then going to see Beauty and the Beast 3D afterwards.

Since coming back from retreat a lot has been going on for the Theta chapter of Sigma Alpha. The annual Men of the Ag Campus Calendar was a hit as usual. And, within the shortened month of January, Sigma Alpha was privileged to be asked to participate in two separate events by our two brother fraternities. During our first meeting on January 23, 2012, the men of Alpha Gamma Rho asked the Theta chapter to participate in All Sing. After voting the ladies decided to accept the invitation. The following week on January 30, 2010, the Theta chapter was asked to participate in Homecoming 2012 with Farmhouse Fraternity. The fact that Farmhouse brought in a beautifully decorated cookie cake definitely helped to sway the hearts of the ladies. After voting it was decided that we would indeed do Homecoming with Farmhouse Fraternity.

So as you can see, the Theta chapter of Sigma Alpha has a busy semester planned with many new refreshing opportunities ahead.

Thank you to Brittany Mitchell for providing this news post.
