As we enter the New Year, we come forth with new ideas and exciting events that will make 2013 one of the best years for the Theta Chapter of Sigma Alpha yet!
2012 closed with the election of a new Executive Board and Chair Positions. Leading us as President is the wonderful Sarah Howard, and completing the exec board are Alyssa Clements as 1st Vice, Kaysie Jennings as 2nd Vice, Adrienne Myers as Secretary, Emily Shearin as Treasurer, and MiKayla Goodman as Rush Chair.
Elected as chair positions were Amber West as Philanthropy Chair, Carly O’Connell as Sisterhood Chair, Sarah Hargrove as Public Relations Chair, Julie Skaggs as Social Chair, Lockard Cassity as Fundraising Chair, Megan Moore as Professional Chair, Erin Brinkley as Scholarship Chair, Megan Godfrey as Webmaster, Shelby Mendoza as Chaplain, Jessie Tipton as Alumni Relations Chair, Libby Schwartz as Historian, Ravin Thomasson as Homecoming Chair, and Sharena Domingo as Smokey’s Howl Chair. Congratulations to all of the sisters elected to positions!
The end of 2012 also brought forth the exciting opportunity to have a National Visit with our regional consultant Carly Earp. During the visit our members took part in many activities that promoted communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities. Our chapter was also given the chance to make short-term and long-term goals for the future of the Theta chapter that we hope to implement throughout the next year. Although we are sad to see Carly go, our members are grateful for all the help and knowledge she gave us over the years and we are excited to welcome our new regional consultant, Lisa Jackson.
The beginning of 2013 started out with our annual Spring Retreat, however this year things were a bit different as retreat was held in Knoxville on campus instead of a cabin in the mountains. Nonetheless, all of our sisters had a great time catching up with one another after the long Christmas break and discussing future plans for the semester.
Friday night all of our sisters gathered at Wasabi Steakhouse to enjoy a Japanese meal cooked in front of us at our table that left us entertained AND stuffed! Afterward, we were invited by our sisterhood chair, Carly, to attend a bowling sisterhood at the UC Down Under recreation area. The next morning we met bright and early to begin business for the semester. After our executive committee discussed our new risk management policy and important dates for the semester, our members chose what committees they would like to be placed on, and then broke into their committee groups to discuss plans with each chair holder. After lunch, our chairs announced their plans for the remainder of the semester.
Sisterhood Chair Carly O’Connell was first to speak, and announced several new and exciting sisterhoods planned for the semester, such as a UT Basketball game Sisterhood in February and Trivia Night at Mellow Mushroom in March.
Next, Julie Skaggs informed members of upcoming social events she has planned, a mixer with Beta Epsilon Pi and Spring Formal occurring in mid-April. Julie also requested of co-chair for the semester, and Macy McGuire was elected for the job. Congratulations Macy!
Lockard Cassity also told us about the various fundraising events we would be participating in this semester, such as our Stud Auction, and important due dates regarding Men of the Ag Campus Calendar sales and dates for Stud Auction.
Sarah Hargrove, our PR Chair, spoke next and showed us the mock up for our Spring Rush shirts. They will be purple with our letters on front and will include a chevron design on the back. Other t-shirt and apparel options were discussed as well and possibilities included were monogrammed keychains and croakies.
Philanthropy Chair Amber West spoke next, and excited us with her many opportunities for active and inactive philanthropies she has planned for the semester, including visiting a local nursing home close to Valentine’s Day, participating in Relay for Life and Ag in the Classroom, as well as being able to take part in blood drives.
And of course, no retreat would be complete without some Mums!
Since retreat, the Theta chapter has been very busy in January with all of its activities. Currently, we are selling our Men of the Ag Campus Calendar and the last week of the month signals the beginning of Rush Week. Other upcoming events include a Valentine Party Sisterhood on February 10th, a philanthropy opportunity where we will visit a local nursing home on February 13th, and the Alpha Gamma Rho/Sigma Alpha Leadership Seminar in Nashville, TN on February 15-17 that several of our members are going to be attending this year.
We are all looking forward to a great semester as Sigma Alpha starts out the new 2013 year with exciting events and new opportunities.
